Located just a short drive from The Peacock at Owler Bar, Surprise View offers one of the most breathtaking vantage points in the Peak District. True to its name, this stunning spot reveals sweeping panoramas of the Hope Valley, with views stretching to Stanage Edge, Mam Tor, and even the Derwent Valley on a clear day. It’s a dream destination for photographers, particularly at sunrise or sunset, and is magical in the mist.
It is also a fantastic spot for stargazing thanks to the low light pollution but take care if travelling there in the dark.
Accessible via several walking routes or a short walk from the designated car park (payable via the RinGo app), Surprise View is a must-visit location for anyone exploring the area. Please note that the rocky terrain near the viewpoint may not be suitable for wheelchairs or prams, and there are no toilet facilities on-site.

Get Lost in Gillfield Wood
